Patent Analytics and the World’s Top 3 Most Innovative Companies
Innovation is the lifeblood of any patent system, and we took a look at the organizations that are leading the way into the future. Using the LexisNexis® PatentSight® database, Swiss consulting company EconSight ranked the most forward-looking companies that are innovating in novel spaces and are best suited to break into new markets. Rather than reiterating their rankings which focus on the future, today we take a retroactive look at what the top three most innovative companies have accomplished at the USPTO and around the world.
#1 global innovator: Samsung
One of the most widely recognized brands around, Korean conglomerate Samsung is best known for providing consumer electronics, such as smartphones and televisions. A quick search of more than 107 worldwide patent authorities using the LexisNexis TotalPatent One® patent search platform for patent documents assigned to Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. reveals an incredible 757,261 results. Of those patent records, 45% were filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office, while Samsung’s USPTO filings account for less than one quarter of its patent portfolio. To date, Samsung has had 71.9% of its USPTO patent applications granted, and the number of USPTO patents it receives each year has been on an upward trend for the past two decades.
#2 global innovator: Johnson & Johnson
With products in the pharmaceutical, medical device and consumer products spaces, the earliest Johnson & Johnson patent document retrievable using TotalPatent One® dates back to 1904. To date, TotalPatent One users can access over 42,000 Johnson & Johnson patent documents. In the United States, the company maintains a hard-earned 67.6% allowance rate, as 46.9% of its filed patent applications have required at least one Request for Continued Examination (RCE) before being either issued or abandoned.
#3 global innovator: LG
Much like Samsung, Korean-based LG innovations arise mostly in the consumer electronics space. With more than 400,000 accessible patent documents, over half come from the Korean Intellectual Property Office. The USPTO patent database contains the second-most LG patent documents, comprising just over 16% of LG’s total. Of the top three innovative companies discussed, LG maintains the highest USPTO allowance rate, with 85.1% of its patent applications coming to issue.
