But before looking at the inventor network, we first analyzed the strength of both companies’ patent portfolios. This step is important because patent portfolio value cannot be assessed by filing counts alone. Some patents protect foundational technologies that later innovations build upon, while others cover narrower or more incremental improvements.
To capture this difference, the analysis used the LexisNexis® Patent Asset Index, a portfolio-strength metric that reflects the overall innovative strength of a patent portfolio. It considers not only the number of patent families, but also the technological relevance of those patents and the breadth of market protection behind them. In this way, the Patent Asset Index helps distinguish between portfolio size and portfolio quality.
This portfolio analysis showed two complementary profiles: Danaher contributed scale and stability, with a larger patent portfolio and higher filing activity. Masimo, by contrast, had a smaller portfolio but showed high Technology Relevance and a strong increase in Patent Asset Index. Looking at the average Technology Relevance trends for Danaher and Masimo’s patent portfolio over the last 20 years it is noticeable that Masimo added high-impact innovation to Danaher’s broader portfolio base.
That finding provided the foundation for the next question: who are the people and collaboration structures behind Masimo’s high-impact innovation? The inventor network analysis added a different perspective and helped to answer this question.

The analysis showed that Masimo’s innovation activity was organized around a connected core of inventors, with a limited number of key individuals linking multiple teams. The top 10 key inventors contributed to 62 % of Masimo’s patent filings since 2016, and the analysis showed that removing these inventors would cause the network to fragment into smaller, less connected groups.
That finding is strategically important. In an acquisition, the value of innovation depends not only on the acquired patent portfolio, but also on whether the people who created and connected that innovation remain engaged after the transaction.
